Joseph Kleitsch · 1882–1931
Joseph Kleitsch: a biography
A European-trained portrait painter who found his true subject in Laguna Beach, Joseph Kleitsch was one of the boldest colorists of the California Impressionist movement.
Banat and European training
Joseph Kleitsch was born on June 6, 1882, in the village of Sânmihaiu Român in the Banat, then part of Austria-Hungary and now in Romania, into an ethnic German family. He began painting at the age of seven and later trained in Budapest, Munich and Paris, where the old masters in Europe's great museums shaped his lifelong love of portrait and figure painting.
Chicago
Kleitsch emigrated to the United States in 1912. On July 22, 1914, he married Edna Gregatis of Chicago; they had one child, Eugene. In Chicago he made his name as a portrait and figure painter, winning a gold medal at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1914 and a silver medal from the Painters' and Sculptors' Club, and belonging to the Chicago Society of Artists and the Palette and Chisel Club.
Laguna Beach
In 1920 Kleitsch moved to the artists' village of Laguna Beach, California, and rose to the challenge of its brilliant light and varied landscape. He painted the town's eucalyptus-lined streets, the coves and surf of the Pacific coast, the canyons inland, and the nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano. He became a significant member of the Laguna Beach art colony and the Laguna Beach Art Association, winning its grand prize and figure prize. In 1922 Arthur Millier of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "he was a born colorist; he seemed to play on canvas with the abandon of a gypsy violinist."
Death and legacy
On November 16, 1931, at forty-nine, Kleitsch died of a heart attack in front of the courthouse in Santa Ana, California. Two years later his widow opened the Joseph Kleitsch Fine Arts Gallery in Laguna Beach. His paintings are held by the Irvine Museum, the Laguna Art Museum, the Crocker Art Museum and the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, among others.
